Attachments and images
Files
Attached documents appear as file chips in your message - never as their extracted text. Where they go follows the AI's mode:
- Auto - Offline Only and Auto - My Hardware: read on your device (or your own connected server), always.
- Auto - Online and Offline: read on your device unless Send attachments to online models is on (Settings → Routing). That one setting is both the consent and the routing rule, and it governs regular chats and project sessions alike. Off, an attachment turn is answered offline even by an online-and-offline AI; on, it may travel with the message when routing picks online.
- A pinned online model: the attachment would leave, so the app asks each time - once, or always - unless the setting is on.
When a document is too long for every model on your device (even after the app makes more room for it), the app says so and, if this AI can go online and your plan includes it, offers to send it online - explicitly, for that turn. An offline-only AI is never sent online quietly: the offer there is to switch the AI to Auto - Online and Offline first. Health questions stay on your device whatever the size.
Images
Vision - reading screenshots, charts, documents, photos - comes from a vision model and its vision add-on, which the app downloads together when you download a vision model. The add-on loads only when you send an image: the model is graded for text on its own, the first image in a conversation loads its eyes, and the model's card says when the add-on would not fit alongside right now - an image question then says so too. One image per message (a new one replaces the last), PNG, JPEG, GIF or BMP, up to 10 MB.
Where an image goes follows one rule: local when local can, ask when only online can. An Auto mode uses a vision model on your device when you have one. Without one, an online-and-offline AI offers an online vision model and asks before the image leaves (unless the setting above is on); an offline-only AI offers the download instead. A pinned model that cannot see images offers to use one that can - on your device, or by downloading one. The online offer only appears when your plan includes online models.
Health images are the exception to every automatic online rule: an Auto mode reads them on your device only, always. (Pin an online model yourself and the app asks before an image leaves, like any attachment.)
Pictures in projects
When a project agent opens a picture or a PDF and its model has no vision, an Auto mode hands that call to a downloaded model that can see, when one fits. Otherwise the image becomes a note the AI can act on (a PDF can be read as text), and the rail says why the picture was not looked at - a line that stays readable after the steps fold and is kept in your records. A picture a tool returns does not move the session onto the vision model; the session keeps its agent model and checks its work through the tool's text outputs.
Web search in projects
An agent's web search runs through the AI's own routing: an online-and- offline AI may search; an offline-only AI is refused and the rail says so. A silent online call is named for what it is: waiting on the provider.
